Cataracts,Epidemiology
The development of cataracts, or cataractous degeneration
represents the leading cause of blindness and visual impairment
throughout the world. With the general aging of the population,
the overall prevalence of visual loss as a result of lenticular
(lens) opacities increases each year. Cataracts cause reversible
blindness in more than 15 million people worldwide, and
this figure is expected to reach 40 million by year 2025.
In the United States alone, 2.4 million cataract surgeries
were performed on individuals over 65 in the year 2005.
